About Ryan

I grew up in Nelson BC, but I have spent much of my adult life exploring professional opportunities in the Northwest Territories and Northern BC. It was not until I became a father that I felt drawn back to the Kootenays. Moving to Kimberley has meant moving home and embracing my roles as a husband, father, brother and uncle.

When I’m not working at Selkirk Secondary School as a counsellor, I am an avid gardener, skier and canoeist. I feel privileged to live on the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa and Secwepemc peoples and strive towards raising my children in a way that honours and embraces the natural world.

I believe that counselling provides a space where people can explore, examine and articulate the many stories of their lives. As a counsellor I am honoured to be a co-creator in the counselling space and I believe strongly in the therapeutic value of relationship. I feel incredibly privileged to help clients as they journey towards change. I want to support clients by learning about their unique histories and understanding how trauma can impact their lives. I strive to treat clients holistically, rather than treating just symptoms.

Therepeutic Approach

I strive to provide an integrated approach to therapy that is based on the unique needs of the client and rooted in best practice. I believe in creating therapeutic spaces where clients can explore, discover and deepen their own understandings in order to gain awareness and guide personal growth. I view counselling through a person centered, trauma informed lens and draw upon techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotionally Focused Therapy and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

Professional Background

Ryan Graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. His initial career aspiration was to work in the field of Geographic Information Systems and Resource Analysis. Although he found this work to be gratifying, his experience volunteering in homeless shelters and with the community crisis line were profoundly impactful. Curiosity and interest peaked, Ryan decided to pursue a career change and embarked on a new path.

After deciding to train as a teacher, Ryan worked in a remote Arctic community for several years before moving to Prince George, BC. Ryan spent many years teaching in the field of Special Education, with a primary focus on working with at-risk youth. He then decided to pursue further training because of a growing interest in the field of counselling, this led to becoming certified as a Registered Clinical Counsellor.

Ryan has worked as a counsellor in high school settings since 2019 and is currently employed full-time with SD 6 as a Counsellor and Learning Services Teacher.
