Meet Liz

Our human essence lies not in arrival, but in being almost there
David Whyte

The type of clients that Liz works best with:

Individual

I believe that meaningful change happens through connection, safety, and curiosity, rather than pressure or “fixing”. I strive to meet people where they are and support them in making sense of their experience at a pace that feels respectful and manageable. I offer a space where you can slow down, tune into what is happening beneath the surface, and gently explore patterns that shape how you relate to yourself, others, and the world. Together, we work toward greater self-trust, emotional clarity, and a deeper sense of groundedness and wholeness.

Youth

I deeply value the openness, intensity, and self-discovery that often characterize this stage of life. I understand that adolescence can bring big changes and emotions, uncertainty about one’s place in the world, and pressure to figure things out before feeling ready. I strive to create a space that feels calm, accepting, and safe enough for young people to express themselves honestly, even when words are hard to find.

With youth, I focus on building trust and helping young people develop awareness of their emotions, reactions, and inner experiences. Together, we work towards understanding what is happening in their body and nervous system, learning ways to feel more grounded, and strengthening their sense of self. My approach tries to honour each young person’s individuality and to help them feel seen, respected, and capable as they navigate a complex and changing world.

Liz uses the following Therapeutic Modalities in her work with clients
Somatic Therapy
Somatic therapy recognizes that our bodies hold important information about our experiences, even when we feel we understand things logically. Many people notice that patterns such as anxiety, shutdown, tension, or strong emotional reactions continue to show up in their body despite insight or self-awareness. Somatic therapy offers a way to gently explore these patterns by slowing down and paying attention to what is happening internally.
Mindfulness Practices

Mindfulness is about slowing down and paying attention to what’s happening in the present moment, inside and out, without judgment. This includes noticing thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations as they arise, rather than trying to push them away or immediately change them.

In therapy, mindfulness can support greater awareness and curiosity about day-to-day experiences and habitual ways of responding to stress, relationships, or uncertainty. Over time, this practice can help clients develop a steadier relationship with their inner experience, increasing choice, emotional regulation, and a sense of calm and clarity.

Narrative Therapy

Narrative Therapy focuses on the stories we carry about ourselves, our relationships, and our lives. These stories are often shaped by past experiences, challenges, or messages from others, and they can sometimes limit how we see ourselves or what feels possible.

This approach helps clients step back from the problem, recognize their strengths and values, and explore alternative stories that better reflect who they are and what matters to them. Narrative therapy supports people in reclaiming their voice, making meaning of their experiences in new ways, and developing a stronger sense of agency and self-understanding.

Body Focused Expressive Arts

Body-focused expressive arts use creative processes to support exploration, insight, and connection. This may involve working with words, images, movement, sound, or a combination of creative modalities, depending on what feels accessible and meaningful.

Rather than interpreting or analyzing creative expressions, this approach focuses on noticing what emerges and how the body and emotions respond during the creative process. Expressive arts can open up new perspectives, support emotional processing, and help clients connect more deeply with themselves and others, especially when words alone feel limiting.

Clients that Appreciate Liz’s Therapeutic Approach tend to be:
  • Individuals feeling anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected, or “stuck” in ways they can’t fully explain.
  • Those who want to better understand their emotions, reactions, and communication patterns.
  • People interested in developing emotional awareness and new ways of responding to life’s challenges.
  • People who notice that stress or past experiences live in their body as tension, shutdown, or strong emotional responses.
  • People who are emotionally curious and open to gently exploring their inner world.
  • Clients seeking clarity around identity, values, life transitions, or a changing sense of self.
  • Individuals new to counselling who want a supportive, non-judgmental space to explore what’s going on.
  • Individuals who have tried counselling before but found that traditional talk therapy hasn’t created the change they’re looking for.
  • Neurodiverse individuals or people with disabilities seeking a respectful, empowering therapeutic relationship.
  • Survivors of emotional abuse who want to reconnect with their sense of self and rebuild trust internally.
  • Clients who value depth and insight and are open to gradual, meaningful change rather than quick fixes.
  • Thoughtful, imaginative, and creative people, even if they don’t always see themselves that way.
  • Those drawn to creative, narrative, or body-focused approaches, even if they are unsure exactly what these might entail.

What’s one thing you wish more people understood about mental health?
I believe that well-being is not a fixed destination, but something that shifts and changes throughout life. At different stages, the ways we cope, relate, or make sense of the world may support us well or begin to feel limiting. This doesn’t mean something is wrong; it means we are responding to change. Humans are remarkably adaptive and creative, yet it’s natural to reach points where support and reflection are needed. Counselling can offer intentional space to notice what’s no longer working, reconnect with inner resources, and explore what comes next, without the pressure to arrive at a perfect or final version of oneself.
Professional Background

I was born and raised in Calgary in a family that valued curiosity and different ways of understanding the world. From an early age, I was curious about human experience and how people make sense of their lives, which led me to complete an undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Alberta and begin my career as an Academic Strategist, supporting university students through a strengths-based approach to learning, self-understanding, and growth. Working closely with students over time shaped my belief that meaningful change happens through attuned support, patience, and respect for each person’s unique process.

Alongside this work, I spent summers working near Lake Louise, where time in nature and community deepened my appreciation for embodiment, reflection, and the impact of environment on well-being. These experiences helped clarify my path toward counselling. Since completing my Master’s in Counselling, I have worked in wilderness-based substance use treatment, K–12 school settings, and post-secondary institutions. My approach, originally rooted in narrative therapy, has expanded to include expressive arts and mindfulness-based practices, and I am currently engaged in in-depth training in somatic therapy through the Hakomi Method.
