Children & Family Counselling in Kimberley and the Kootenays
Book NowWe understand that a child’s brain is still developing and that many behaviours are part of trying to make sense of their world. This can look like testing limits, acting out, or struggling in ways that are hard to put into words. We meet youth where they are — with curiosity, patience, and respect — recognizing they are undergoing deep emotional and developmental transformation. Our counsellors aim to be trusted guides, helping young people explore their thoughts, emotions, and beliefs in a safe and supportive environment. We work with children of all ages and neurotypes, including autistic children and their families, providing tailored support that honours each child’s unique needs and strengths.
Whether you’re working through something specific or hoping to strengthen your family relationships, therapy can offer support, guidance, and growth for everyone involved.
Why People Choose Children and Family Counselling
Family Therapy (children and youth of all ages)
When a child is struggling, the whole family often feels it. That’s why we approach counselling through a family systems lens — because meaningful, lasting change happens in relationships. Rather than stepping into the role of expert on your child, our aim is to come alongside your family and support the parent-child connection as the foundation for healing.
Children make sense of their emotions through connection — especially with caregivers. Our family therapist works from an attachment-based perspective to help families understand what’s happening beneath the behaviours, deepen their emotional bonds, and co-create new ways of relating. Sessions may include any combination of caregivers and children, depending on what best supports the process.
Our work focuses on:
- Helping parents better understand their child’s emotional world, behaviours, and developmental needs
- Support a child through emotional or behavioural challenges
- Deepen connection and cooperation within the family system
- Increase confidence in handling difficult moments and big emotions
- Help children develop emotional intelligence and self-regulation skills
- Identify and shift reactive or unhelpful relational patterns
- Explore what may be at the root of recurring challenges or distress in the family
- Foster a sense of emotional security so children can explore and take healthy risks
- Understanding each family member’s needs, attachment styles, and emotional worlds
- Learning how to communicate more effectively—especially during conflict
- Navigating transitions such as separation, loss, relocation, or changes at school
- Supporting parenting approaches for raising neurodiverse or autistic children
Individual Youth Counselling (Youth 12+)
Adolescence is a time of immense growth, identity formation, and emotional intensity. Teens often need a space outside of their family to talk openly, process experiences, and explore who they are becoming. Individual youth counselling offers a confidential and supportive environment for teens to express themselves and receive guidance from a trusted adult.
We work with youth navigating anxiety, depression, school or peer stress, identity questions, grief, family conflict, and more. While sessions focus on the youth, we also stay connected with caregivers when appropriate — because young people thrive when their support systems are aligned.
Our counsellors build trust through warmth, presence, and genuine respect, offering tools and insight that help teens better understand themselves and their relationships
Youth Counselling Can Support:
- Helping teens develop emotional intelligence and self-regulation skills
- Exploring the root of recurring personal or interpersonal challenges
- Building confidence in managing big emotions and difficult moments
- Processing family dynamics, grief, or identity-related experiences
- Understanding their own needs, values, and beliefs in a safe space
- Navigating social challenges such as bullying or peer conflict
Children & Youth Mentorship (Children 5-17 years)
Some children need more than traditional talk therapy — they need connection, consistency, and a trusted adult to walk alongside them as they grow. Our mentorship sessions are designed to meet children where they are, offering supportive guidance through play, creativity, conversation, and exploration of thoughts and emotions.
This service blends therapeutic principles with a relational, mentorship-based approach. It’s ideal for children and youth who may not be ready for formal counselling but would benefit from regular one-on-one time with a safe, compassionate adult.
Mentorship may support children in:
- Building emotional language and regulation skills
- Developing social confidence and resilience
- Feeling empowered, heard, and understood outside of home or school
- Processing life changes (e.g., family separation, school transitions, grief)
- Encouraging safe, healthy relationships with others
- Increasing confidence in new environments or challenges
- Supporting children who may be struggling socially or feeling left out
- Support children who are struggling socially or experiencing bullying
- Encourage children in building safe, healthy relationships with others.
Parents and caregivers are kept in the loop throughout the process, ensuring continuity and support across all environments.

Affordable and Accessible Options for Counselling in the Kootenays
We recognize that counselling can be costly, and that not everyone has access to extended health benefits. We aim to make counselling as accessible as possible while offering care that is thoughtful, consistent, and responsibly paced.
As a primary way of supporting clients with lower incomes, our student therapists offer sessions at a reduced rate and are often the best option for more affordable care. In limited situations, and depending on availability, further fee flexibility may be considered within student counselling.
Some registered clinicians may offer a limited number of sliding scale spaces, depending on availability. Sliding scale availability is capacity-dependent and is most often reserved for existing clients who experience changes in financial circumstances.
If cost is a concern, we encourage you to reach out so we can help explore the options that may be available.
